While Mulan may not be my favorite of the princess movies (I like my princess movies with lots of singing), I absolutely loved this live action version. Though there was still no singing, the story was beautifully told and the cinematography was gorgeous.
The Princess movies are such a big part of the Disney canon that it is no surprise that many of them have had a live-action makeover, and often Disney has used these reimaginings to rework some issues audiences have found dated in the original. With the release of The Little Mermaid less than a year away and Snow White set to open in theaters in 2024 take a look at every Disney princess live-action movie, ranked.
Since the release of their first feature-length film in 1937, Disney has made princesses a priority. The Disney Princess franchise is one of their most recognizable. But in recent years, Disney has been taking these classics and remaking the as live-action films. With the release of the live-action The Little Mermaid teaser trailer, Disney is continuing to add adaptions to this already lengthy list. Each new remake brings a different twist to the familiar story in order to build upon the original. Though some are more distinct than others. With a variety of added characters, new takes, and even extra songs mixed in with the stories everyone knows and loves, Disney has made a new line-up of princesses.
Disney's princess remakes struggle to respect the classics while making the story their own. It is impossible to satisfy all fans, but they have tried tirelessly. In the last eight years, Disney released six live-action princess movies and there are more to come. With any luck, The Little Mermaid and Snow White will find a happy balance between old and new that will allow them to tell their own story while maintaining the nostalgia that comes with a remake.
As yet, Maleficent is the only one of the live-action princess movies to have its own sequel, though Disney has discussed a sequel for Aladdin and a prequel for Beauty and the Beast. As Maleficent includes the complete story of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has to go in its own direction. It is set years after the first film when Aurora has been the ruling queen for some time. The characters tell the story of the first film, but as they are in Sleeping Beauty where Maleficent is the villain. Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), Aurora's soon-to-be mother-in-law, hates fairies and does everything she can to drive a wedge into Aurora and Maleficent's relationship, including framing Maleficent of cursing her husband. Maleficent retreats to hide and discovers herself to be one of the Dark Fey, which means she has a phoenix form that she must earn. The fairies and the humans are on the brink of war again. Aurora and Maleficent make up and Maleficent sacrifices herself for Aurora, but once again their love saves the day, resurrecting Maleficent into her phoenix form. This live-action movie is an original sequel, and as such has little comparison to Sleeping Beauty, but it does give Aurora more screen time than in the previous film. In this way it does expand the princess's character.
The Disney Princess franchise is comprised of thirteen Official Princesses and a number of associated heroines. This page lists and classifies official, honorary official, and unofficial princesses and heroines.
Each of the following thirteen women has been certified as an \"Official Disney Princess.\" These princesses fall into the requirements listed above. Irene Bedard and Judy Kuhn provide the voice and singing voice of Pocahontas in both movies, respectively. Pocahontas was born as the only child of Chief Powhatan, thus giving her the title of Chieftain's Daughter. Though not royalty, she is accorded the respect of one (i.e. a princess) in the sequel and is officially regarded as a Disney Princess. Her eventual marriage to John Rolfe (a commoner) does not change her status or his.
Each of the following women is on the shortlist to become an Official Disney Princess. These princesses are new and fit the requirements listed above, and will likely join the franchise soon, this rank may change frequently as new princesses are created.
Each of the following womens have been associated with the Disney Princess Franchise, or seen with the other Princesses. These princesses fall into the requirements listed above, but are not official because their movies are too successful, and have their own franchise. Regardless of any actual title(s) possessed, each Honorary Official Disney Princess is properly addressed (within the franchise) with the title of \"Princess\" preceding their name.

Many Disney movies of Live Action are at an early stage of production but most of the Disney princesses have their human version. Many girls dream of becoming a Disney princess after watching the different movies. Disney continued to feed our fantasy by bringing these classics to the live action versions and turning the princesses into girls of flesh and blood. These new productions were very successful at the box office and the actresses were chosen carefully to ensure a similarity with the original princesses.

Many successful Disney movies have greatly impacted naming trends, and the princess characters are historically some of the most influential. Let's take a closer look at some of the beloved Disney Princess names.
While the 2007 Disney film Enchanted may start off animated, this comedic parody of Disney Princess movies switches to live-action partway through. This may be why the protagonist princess Giselle is not considered an official Disney Princess, although some fans speculate it was more of a contractual issue with the character's actress.

Though some of those princesses have existed in the world of Disney since the 1930s, the list of \"Official Disney Princesses\" has actually had some major changes over the decades, with new princesses getting added and others taken away.
Commercial reasons were also behind Tinker Bell's removal as a princess. As she is at the center of her own merchandising line of toys and games called Disney Fairies, she was taken off the list of Disney princess and replaced with Tiana, around the time of Princess and the Frog.
Despite having more of a royal background than say Mulan, what likely kept her off the list was that she spends much of the movie not wanting to be a princess. That and the fact that her hoodie and tutu look does not quite fit in with the elaborate ball gowns of many an official princess.
Though listed on the Disney Princess wiki as an official princess, Disney's most recent royal has not had her coronation yet. However, with the Mouse House having plans to expand the Princess merchandise range into South East Asia since at least 2007 (per the WSJ), it could be a matter of time before she joins Mulan and Jasmine in the canon of Asian princesses.
Each Disney princess originates from a specific region of this world. Some origins are known; others are not. This list was updated to include information about more Disney princesses and their countries of origin, including Beauty and the Beast's Belle, Aladdin's Jasmine, and Rapunzel of Tangled.
