In recent years, portable ultrasound devices have become more portable and affordable for use at the point of care. This ease of use has motivated new directions in clinical application to the point of care. These include new applications of medical ultrasonography that can be performed by the frontline clinician, including bedside pleural and abdominal US examinations. Current reviews of these applications of this approach in the emergency medicine literature focus on its relation to patient care. In more traditional EM settings, a growing practice has seen routine use of ultrasound for musculoskeletal imaging beginning with the subspecialty of rheumatology. More recently, in the patients who present to the ED with complex medical problems that require urgent consideration, clinicians have begun to use standard ultrasound of the heart and abdomen in the patients who present with respiratory or hemodynamic dysfunction and a broad differential. In this setting, the clinician uses the ultrasound as a roadmap to guiding further clinical workup and management decisions.
The book Emergency Ultrasound: Ready to Use, Illustrated, the only practice-based guide to point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) by the American College of Emergency Physicians, Fauconnier describes evidence-based clinical applications of this safe, low cost, readily available diagnostic tool. It provides a basic understanding for the clinician to begin making appropriate use of POCUS in a wide variety of clinical settings.
This volume provides annotated references. It provides a basic understanding for the clinician to begin making appropriate use of POCUS in a wide variety of clinical settings. POCUS has seen dramatic growth, but it is underused because ultrasound technology is not commonly available in clinical settings. Often the patient is coded and the patient’s data are not recorded in the patient’s medical record. The POCUS examination requires no particular technical skills or knowledge and the examiner can perform an evaluation in a short period of time. The book will provide the reader with a basic understanding of the principles of POCUS, measurement and image acquisition protocols, pitfalls, physics and clinical applications. d2c66b5586
