This is to update the subtitles on the server to a new revision. There are no options for this. HTTP requests don't have any information about subtitles. The requests are made in the same way as any other file download. So a server usually just saves the SRT file into a new folder because the outdated file already is located there. After that the request directory is renamed to srt_update.zip. The server will update the file as soon as you upload the new revision. The filenames also could be reset to the SRT release version.
If there are playback issues or an insufficiently formatted subtitle file, the most likely error is the subtitle file itself. This could happen if the user has edited the subtitle file or if the code of the video files and the SRT/SUB files don't match. Also some formats, like Xvid, are not in conformance with the newer subtitle standards. So these are usually the worse cases.
Downloading the subtitle files and including your own subtitles into your video is quite simple. You can either just let the system merge the 2 files together into one or provide the proper binary data to do it. The latter is definitely recommended because a picture is worth a thousand words.
This is a list of the most popular SRT subtitle file formats. Sadly, most of them are non-conformant and the user should fall back to non-hardcoded subtitles. Transferred files usually end in .srt with the extension of the release. Files usually end in .zip or .xml (for music over the web iTunes and Amazon.) d2c66b5586
